Dona Drake -

Updated version

  1. Interesting. it sounds like Dona did not identify as Black, did not believe in the one drop and instead rightly chose her own racial self identification. Not out of denial but out of reality as well as career preservation. Also US census records for "Negro" and "mulatto" were often misapplied to people who were nearly all white or who may have had Black ancestry but identified as white. It was down to who took the census that day not the reality of that individuals life or self perception. America's Jim Crow laws are so stupid from 1% and 2% "native Americans" to people who are white being forced to be "Black" they resemble the Nuremberg Laws not the land of the free. Good for Marilyn, Bill and Dona!
